When try to run a game I get this message "Please insert the original disc
intead of a backup (4001)." Then the game doesn't play. these games are not
backups or pirated copies. They were bought legally and it is really
frustrating to pay so much money for a game when you have to fool around so
much to get it to run. How can I get the games to run like they're supposed
to?

If you have multiple drives on the machine then try eg a cd-rw + dvd-rom
drive, then you could try the other drive. Disabling non-used drives in
Device Manager sometimes helps too.

If it's anything other than the original disc that you're using eg a mounted
iso image of the software, then some copy protection mechanisms can detect
that.

Otherwise more details of the game and / or googling a bit with the error
message may turn up a solution.

Contact the manufacturers of the games that don't work and ask them.
It doesn't sound like a Vista issue.
