Problem saving documents back to network file server

Hello All,

We are starting notice a small issue.

When a user tries to save an Excel or Word 2007 document back to a network
file server, it just hangs and never does anything. The user normally has to
ctrl+alt+delete to get out of the document.

I have found that all the document were created in Office 97-2003 format. We
just recently upgraded about 300 client workstations to Office 2007. This is
not a company wide issue, so far only three users working in the same
department.

With the documents being created in 97-2003 format, when the user opens the
document it shows in compatibility mode. I have saved the document back into
97-2003 format and saved it back on the file server and it opens and closes
with no problem.

We are using Windows server 2003 with the latest services packs.

Has anyone ran across the same problem and is there a fix for this.
I have researched the issue, but most KB articles point or reference
MS Vista and all our workstations are XP with the latest service packs.

Thanks in advance,
Ron

I've seen antivirus programs do this. If you disable the AV on the
workstation and/or on the server, does it work?

I will try this solution and will report back once I know more.

Thanks,

Ok. Just as an FYI, the last time I saw it was with CA antivirus. We had to
run processmon.exe to figure it out. It took months with the help of CA's
support staff to get to the bottom of it. It was with an issue saving PPT
files with embedded images. It also occured with certain other Office docs,
with and without images.

Good luck!

Ok. We worked on this a few hours today and still the same result.
I will have to call Trend Micro and see if they have had any known
issues for this type of problem.

Our Telecom department has massive amount of embedded images
in both Word and Excel and run some marco's in certain spreadsheets.
I will get with our networking group tomorrow and see about running
the processmon.exe.

Thanks for the help.

Curious, what did you do to test it? Did you disable Trend to test it? I
mean if it works with the AV disabled, that would be a clear sign that it's
an AV issue.

I also remember a setting to not scan network drives based on CA's
suggestions. However, they wound up updating a DLL to make it work. We
tested it satisfactorily, whcih they included in their next engine update a
week later.

And you're welcome for the help!

We actually closed the Trend Micro client and in the process we found that
the firewall portion of Trend Officescan was turned on and running. We
turned
off this feature and in the process we found that Windows firewall was also
running. We then made a group policy to turn off the Windows firewall which
I have found in other posts to be a possible cause.

Overall disabling the Trend as you pointed out would rule out it being an AV
problem.
I am thinking it has something to do with documents being created in 97-2003
and now with
2007 installed and all documents opening in compatabilty mode.

I will pop over to an Office news group and see if anyone has had this
issue.

Thanks,
Ron

Hmm, so disabling Trend (stopping the services, too), and disabling the
Windows firewall, still doesn;t do the trick, at least eliminates AV and the
firewall.

I would be curious what you find out in the other group.

Are there any updates on this problem?
We are using CA Anti Virus and Pest Patrol Engines. Even after disabling
them doesn't resolves the issue.

Any help will be appreciated.

Did you just disable scanning, or the all of the CA services in the Services
console?
