Hi,

I’m facing a strange problem with Security Update for Microsoft XML Core
Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181). Every time when I switch off my
laptop, windows prompts me for installing this update even after installing
it successfully , it again prompts me for Installation...and so far the same
update has been installed more then 25 times on my machine....

Can anyone clarify what exactly the problem is?

Thanks in advance

Most likely is that it needs to be rebooted in order to copy the new module
over the one being used. Are you getting a prompt to Restart your computer
with this update? If not, try downloading and installing the update manually.
E.g. if necessary you could then boot in safe mode and install it by running it
manually. I don't think there are any services you would need running to do that.
(Booting in safe mode prevents many services from running.)

You can check yourself what is happening using the update's install log,
the entries the update makes in the Event log (e.g. using the Event Viewer),
and the properties of the modules in use (e.g. by Run...
msinfo32.exe /category SWEnvLoadedModules ).

Process Explorer's Find tool would be a way to find out which process was
using the module(s) being updated. Typically it would be some third-party
program which would be unique to machines which had your symptom.
So then you could try stopping that, whatever it is, before running the the update's
install. (Relatively few people are reporting this symptom and even fewer
bother documenting the cause to try to help those who do. <w>)
