running Windows XP for tablet pc SP2 on HP TC1100. Above error occurs when
using Microsoft update site. Downloading patch manually from Microsoft site
reults in 'access is denied' error when executing. I have admin rights.
Any suggestions?

Same problem I have had and spent 50 hours on the phone with MS, with still
no fix...

Open support calls to fir windows update.
Only many people complaining about their brtoken software will make them
want to do something.
Windows update is broken by the last round of updates, evident by the
massive increase in posted issues with it over the last two weeks.

Do you have by any chance installed and running a Personal Firewall
Software other than the one included in Windows XP?

Bye,

I do, I'll try disabling and installing again. Thanks for the idea.

Never mind, it was already disabled and that doesn't solve my problem.
Neither does mucking in the registry as suggested above. I really don't want
to call Microsoft but I guess I'll have to!

I got the same unhelpful error message (Access Denied... TO WHAT?
MICROSOFT!) when running this update on one of my W2K SP4 boxes (the
other worked OK), and also the very, very, scary "Windows 2000 has been
partially updated and may no longer work" dialogue box at the end.

I executed the secedit command mentioned in one of the links from a
previous poster, made sure my virus scanner and firewall were disabled,
and the update then applied successfully...

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb
/verbose

HTH

Yes, and uninstalling it does not fix the issue.
This was item 3 on the list of 300 things I have done to debug this...
