Problem with Sound

I think, it could be a Windows problem, so I'm posting here...
I have Win 7 x64, which generally works fine. However, recently a sound
problem developed. Sometimes, after a boot up, there is no sound, while the
speaker icon in the notification area (next to the clock) looks normal. In
other instances, after the boot up, the speaker icon has red x, but sound is
working, or no sound. As I see it, when Win 7 is booting up, the sound
system either loads or not, and the speaker icon does not reflect the actual
state of the sound system. Most of the times, re-booting solves the problem.
May someone please help me to eliminate this problem.

Have you installed the latest Win7 drivers from the sound card
manufacturer's web site?

I think this is a quirk in Win 7 and I don't know what causes it, but
occasionally my system has no sound upon boot up but if I click in the
speaker icon it seems to always come back. The same for the red x - if
I click on the speaker icon it goes away.

No, I did not. My Win 7 is just a few months old and came preinstalled with
this sound card... Before I do anything, I'd like to determine what causes
the problem...

Well, in my case, nothing (clicking, adjusting, etc) helps. Only reboot...

Ilya,
Does your PC have onboard audio or a sound card?

Ilya,
Then I guess you have an ATI graphic card with ATI HDMI Audio and an onboard
VIA audio chipset.
Which of both devices are you using?

The fact Win7 is new means nothing if you have not yet updated the
manufacturer's drivers.
