Problem with specific updates

I have had repeated failures trying to install two Critical Updates. I am
running Windows XP Pro x64. The two updates in question are KB916281 and
KB917344. When I try to install either of these updates, either together or
separately, the process abruptly terminates in the middle of the
installation, with a message that the updates have failed. When I look at my
update history, it designates them as having been canceled rather than
failed. So I can't click on the Fail icon to find the problem. For all
other updates, including critical updates, Windows XP updates, and Driver
updates, everything works fine. Only these two particular updates are a
problem. Seems bizarre! Has anyone had a similar experience, and is there
any known solution? Thanks for any help!

On which partition are your \Program Files\ ?
Problems have been reported of they are not on the same partition as
Windows.

Robin, thanks for your prompt reply. I only have a single partition, so
\Program Files is on the same one as \Windows. I do, however, have two
Program Files folders: one is the usual \Program Files and the other is
\Program Files (x64). Most of the installed programs/files are in the
\Program Files (x64) folder, although there are a few in the other. Also, as
far as the Shared Files subfolder, there seems to be some duplication among
the Microsoft files. Might this be the cause of the problem? BTW, I didn't
specifically request at any time to create either of these directories. As
far as I know, this must be the default configuration. Thanks again for your
help.

OK, so that is not the problem.

Have you ever installed any of the IE7 betas?

No, I never have. The only mention of IE7 I remember is a Windows XP update
that said something about a problem with http that only occurred after the
installation of IE7. I went ahead and installed that update, even though I
don't have IE7 installed, because I figured that eventually I would once it
was out of beta. Thanks again.

Have you tried uninstalling any firewall, anti-virus, or anti-malware, to
see if they are preventing the update going through?

Hi, Robin. Well I had aVast Antivirus, Ad-Aware 6 PE, and Spybot Search &
Destroy running. After recovering any changes that Spybot had made, I
uninstalled all three, rebooted and tried to update again. No effect. Same
message. Updates cancelled. This is frustrating! Thanks.
