Problem system check after windows updates

I had a lot of problems installing IE8 but after a month, they finally worked
out. Two weeks ago, I received new updates via Windows updates and I
downloaded them. Now every time I turn on my computer, my computer does a
full disk system check that takes almost 2 hrs to complete. Although I always
press a key to stop the system check, it still does it half the time.

It is very frustrating (and time consuming) and I don't know what could have
caused my computer to do this after the updates.

Has someone out there had this problem? Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Ligia

Have you tried letting it complete the disk check? Just leave it running
while you go out for the evening or something. It may be rescheduling the
check because you're always cancelling it.

Yes I have, most of the time I have no choice because although I try to stop
the system check, it will do it anyway. You have to understand that it does
this every single time I turn on the computer which means I lose over 2 hours
of work every single morning. There is clearly a problem when the computer
forces a full disk check every morning when it never did it before.

I'm not talking about cleaning out the computer, defragmenting and then
doing a virus scan. It's a disk check on a black DOS screen which is
worrysome.

If anyone out there can help, I owuld very much appreciate it.
Thank you.

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista x64 SP2) when
posting to this newsgroup.

How about one week ago? (No updates were released two weeks ago.) What
updates did you "receive"? Were these updates offered by Automatic Updates?
Had you been having problems installing updates (not just IE8) until "two
weeks ago"?

I suggest you do a manual scan, which will report the problems it finds. You
can do this by opening a command window as administrator and typing this:

chkdsk c:

(then press ENTER). What operating system are you running, by the way?

Harry.

Here are my answers:

How about one week ago? It could have been a week ago - this has been
happening for about 1 & 2 weeks (No updates were released two weeks ago.)

What updates did you "receive"? There was a long list of updates on June 10
and I think that's about when everything started malfunctionning at startup.

Were these updates offered by Automatic Updates? YES

Had you been having problems installing updates (not just IE8) until "two
weeks ago"? I only had problems installing IE8 when I received the automatic
update for that but besides that, everything else has been smooth sailing.

Harry suggested I do a chkdsk c: in the command window, which I tried and I
get a message saying that Access denied as I do not have sufficient
privileges. I have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode.

What does that mean in real english!? I'm the only administrator of this PC.

Tansk for any help you can give me.

One more thing, I don't know if this is related to same problem I'm having.
Earlier this evening, I did a full tune-up through Windows Live One Care and
I got an error message that said the following:

Advanced INF Installer
error unregistering the OCX
C:\Windows\system32\20-20Technologies\3DViewer\2020Player_3_0_23_0.dll

Should I be worried? What is this? How can I fix this?

I don't actually have a Vista box handy right now, but if I remember correctly
to get an elevated mode command prompt you right-click on the Command Prompt
icon and select "Run as Administrator".
