Problem using Win Update with Win 98SE

I have two desktop computers. One of them is a back-up.

My main computer uses Windows 98SE. The second computer uses Windows
98.

I check the Windows update website regularly on my main computer - and
have always installed the critical updates. I check for updates less
frequently on the second computer.

I am using McAfee VirusScan and Zone Alarm on both computers.

When I tried to check for updates today at
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp, Internet
Explorer 6 (SP1) promptly diverted me to a different Microsoft page at
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...s&thankspage=2
(which thanked me for my interest in Windows Update).

However, I had no difficulty using Windows Update from my second
computer.

The Windows update troubleshooter at
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...oot.aspx?ln=en
offers a solution to the problem "When trying to access the Windows
Update site, you see a Thank you page". Unfortunately, the "solution"
page is blank.

Has anybody else encountered these problems?

Bob,

Use this link to view the blank page :
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...icleid=4&ln=en

Also, check out the " When attempting to access the Windows Update
Web site you receive the following message: Thank You -- you must be
running a Microsoft windows operating system in order to use windows
update " listing on :
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
as it mentions a possible firewall issue. You DO need to allow
WUAUCLT.EXE and wupdmgr.exe to the Allowed Program list in Zone
Alarm, but you *should* not need to uninstall it.

Many thanks.

Yes. When I try to access the Windows Update site from my main
computer, I do see a page that begins with the text: "Windows Update
is the online Extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of
your computer".

I have reviewed the security settings in Internet Explorer. However,
Active Scripting IS enabled for the Internet zone and for the Trusted
zone.

I have experimented with the zones, by adding
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp to the Trusted
zone. I also used the repair function in Control Panel, in case my
version of Internet Explorer had become corrupted in any way.

Unfortunately, it has not resolved the situation.

I wonder whether the problem has been caused by the latest critical
update to IE6 (SP1) - which I installed on my main computer several
weeks ago - but has not been installed on my second computer.

I think the last update on my main computer might have been Q834707.
However, when I visited the update catalogue today at
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...n/OSresult.asp, the
search function told me that there were no updates available in any of
the categories - which seems rather strange.

I have checked my old win 98 box it has the sp1 with all the updates. It
goes to v4 and his not redirected to v5.

It may be a mixe-up .In order to use the v5 if I remember correctly you have
to install the new BITS service v2 and I don't think you can't install that
on a win 98se machine .

If it can't that's why you have the problem getting v5.
If you read the page you went to, second paragraph it says:
"
You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use
Windows Update.

Hence that's why I think the mix up

ideas:
make sure
WUAUCLT.EXE and wupdmgr.exe to the Allowed Program list in Zone alarm

You can check all the updates package in IE menu help.

more ideas:
this is the one I prefer
follow the step for your win version
If you remove the activeX control and go back to the v4 update, it may work

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319585

for checking updates on your computer try
Qfecheck.exe you may already have it
or get the win95 version here.

Strange indeed. I'm thinking it would be better to use the
Catalog site with the folowing url as the one you posted
only shows some text and a blank box to select from here
and my computer is working fine at WinUP site otherwise.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/

Only way to be sure the last update is working and valid is
to compare the files on your machine with those in the
file list for the update with particular notice paid to the
exact file version number, that's what that file list is
published for. Follow the Read More link to see that
info.

You might have scripting problems which can be fixed by
just installing the latest scripting host package.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Best way to fix ie is to reinstall it, the repair function
is really only a good indication that you need to reinstall
ie if it fails with an error. Passing the repair function
doesn't mean it's good, it just means it isn't REAL bad.

You may also want to delete iuctl.dll in system folder to
reinstall the ActiveX Controls package at WinUP site and
no harm would be done if you downloaded that last update
and applied it offline to insure that all the files got
replaced. Wininit.bak should show those files that were
in use and if any didn't 'make it', I would supposed those
to be the ones of most interest in verifing file versions.

Many thanks for your guidance.

I installed the latest scripting host package but unfortunately, it
did not resolve the problem.

I also uninstalled iuctl.dll (by re-naming the file as iuctl.dl~).
That did not work (maybe, because I could not connect to the update
site).

I also tried to visit the URL at
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/ - but it promptly
diverted to
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...s&thankspage=2
(i.e. the page that tells me that "Windows Update is the online
Extension of Windows that helps me get the most out of my computer -
and thanks me for my interest!).

It occurred to me that my last visit to the Windows Update site might
have downloaded Win XP versions of the critical updates, instead of
the Windows 98 versions. If so, this could have installed XP files on
my Win98 machine which in turn, which might have prompted the
diversion from the v4 update site to the v5 update site.

Consequently, I uninstalled the last two updates, which were:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 for
Windows 98, Windows NT and Windows Millennium - (KB834707)
and
Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB833989)

Uninstalling these updates had no effect. However, the Critical
Update function triggered a notification that Critical Updates were
now available.

I clicked on the "install now" option. It tried to download the
updates from the v4 web-site - but promptly diverted to the v5
web-site. Consequently, I used my backup PC to download the Win 98
versions of the KB834707 and KB833989 updates - and I have
re-installed the updates on both PCs. Windows Update (v4) still works
OK on my backup computer - but not on my main computer.

I have flagged the problem to Microsoft on-line help and support.
They acknowledged my enquiry on November 2nd and stated that a
Microsoft professional would respond to me by email within 1 business
day. I am still waiting for their response.

I do not know what to try next.

You are welcome. I can't agree with some of your assumptions,
XP updates can not even run once on a 98 system and no way,
no how they were downloaded anyway. Since the 98 V4 site and
catalog still working here I took a look see at some of the
Java stuff loading from the catalog site. Redirect.js seems to
show that several sites are to be redirected to depending which
OS (including Longhorn) you are running. BUT what if your Java
package doesn't work? Perhaps instead of defaulting to MS base
site, all that Java jibberish makes a broken Java package redirect
to V5?

http://www.javatester.org/
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers_9.htm

I recommend MS java build 3810, I have the latest Sun and tried
to use it, but it does conk out on me where the MS Java does not.
