i can't seem to get any version of msn messenger or the new windows messenger
to work reliably on my laptop. my laptop is quite powerfull so i don't see
why it is having problems with this. i would like to use windows live
messenger but right after it signs in, my contact list shows up and then it
freezes. if i leeve it alone and not click on it after a minute or 2 it signs
out and says that i have lost my conection with windows live messenger
network and it will sign back in shortly and does a countdown. if i click on
it, not responding shows up in brackets in the top left corner of the window
and it stays that way till i force it to close with task manager. if anyone
can help i would really appreciate it as this is a brand new laptop and if i
can't get msn working i'm gonna take it back. thank you
my laptop:
compaq presario v2670ca
amd turion 64 mobile processor ML-37 (2.0 GHz)
2 gigs of ddr sdram (2 dimm)
120 gig 4200 rpm hard disk
ati radeon xpress 200m igp with 128mb video memory (shared)
windows xp home sp2 (vista capable)

Greetings,

This usually is the result of something wrong in your Messenger client cache. Note that if
this works, you will need to reimport all
your Messenger emoticons, winks, etc. so you will want to back them up first using this tool
if these are important to you:
http://www.baisoft.it/msnbackup_english.asp

Then, shut down Messenger if it's running by right-clicking on the icon in the notification
area and choosing Exit. Next, click Start, then Run, enter "%appdata%\microsoft" and click
OK. Then right-click on the MSN Messenger folder and rename it to OldMessenger and press
Enter. Next, try signing into Messenger again and see if you're able to login. If this
doesn't work, go back and rename the folder back to MSN Messenger (so your winks, emoticons,
etc. are maintained without the backup).

i tried renaming the folder and it didn't change anything. windows messenger
that comes with windows xp works no problem but it doesn't have any of the
features that live messenger has.
after doing this change it still logged in and froze after showing me my
contact list.

Hi,

In that case (and since you already backed up everything if you cared), download and run the
following .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/dow...grsettings.reg

Then try Messenger again.

And that doesn't work, then take a look at your My Documents\My Received Folder and if you
have a MsnMsgr.txt file there. If so,
delete it and then try signing in. If this works, be sure to click the Tools menu, then
Options, Connection category, then Advanced Settings button, and uncheck the box under
'Connection Logging'.

it made it restore all the original settings but didn't get any further than
before. it didn't put any files into my recieved folder. this is kinda
getting annoying. this laptop shouldn't be having a problem running such a
simple program as messenger. i just can't understand how it freezes after it
logs in and shows me my contact list and whos online.

Hi,

Honestly, Messenger is far from "simple". It makes use of significant portion of Windows'
functionality, not to mention all the infrastructure required to just transport messages all
over the globe.

Two other things -- do you have a webcam plugged into the laptop? If so, unplug it and see
what happens then. Secondly, use another account (if you don't have one, just go make
another Hotmail account), sign into that one and see if you have the same problem.

Don't blame the laptop, this is a software problem.
