Greetings,
This usually is the result of something wrong in your Messenger client cache. Note that if this works, you will need to reimport all your Messenger emoticons, winks, etc. so you will want to back them up first using this tool if these are important to you: http://www.baisoft.it/msnbackup_english.asp Then, shut down Messenger if it's running by right-clicking on the icon in the notification area and choosing Exit. Next, click Start, then Run, enter "%appdata%\microsoft" and click OK. Then right-click on the MSN Messenger folder and rename it to OldMessenger and press Enter. Next, try signing into Messenger again and see if you're able to login. If this doesn't work, go back and rename the folder back to MSN Messenger (so your winks, emoticons, etc. are maintained without the backup). -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger/MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger Associate Expert http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/ Messenger Resources - http://messenger.jonathankay.com All posts unless otherwise specified are (c) 2006 Jonathan Kay. i tried renaming the folder and it didn't change anything. windows messenger
that comes with windows xp works no problem but it doesn't have any of the features that live messenger has. after doing this change it still logged in and froze after showing me my contact list. Hi,
In that case (and since you already backed up everything if you cared), download and run the following .reg file: http://messenger.jonathankay.com/dow...grsettings.reg Then try Messenger again. And that doesn't work, then take a look at your My Documents\My Received Folder and if you have a MsnMsgr.txt file there. If so, delete it and then try signing in. If this works, be sure to click the Tools menu, then Options, Connection category, then Advanced Settings button, and uncheck the box under 'Connection Logging'. -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger/MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger Associate Expert http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/ Messenger Resources - http://messenger.jonathankay.com All posts unless otherwise specified are (c) 2006 Jonathan Kay. it made it restore all the original settings but didn't get any further than
before. it didn't put any files into my recieved folder. this is kinda getting annoying. this laptop shouldn't be having a problem running such a simple program as messenger. i just can't understand how it freezes after it logs in and shows me my contact list and whos online. Hi,
Honestly, Messenger is far from "simple". It makes use of significant portion of Windows' functionality, not to mention all the infrastructure required to just transport messages all over the globe. Two other things -- do you have a webcam plugged into the laptop? If so, unplug it and see what happens then. Secondly, use another account (if you don't have one, just go make another Hotmail account), sign into that one and see if you have the same problem. Don't blame the laptop, this is a software problem. -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger/MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger Associate Expert http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/ Messenger Resources - http://messenger.jonathankay.com All posts unless otherwise specified are (c) 2006 Jonathan Kay.
