This problem has been around for some time. It is truly disheartening
to realize that Microsoft has done nothing
to solve the problem for its users. Why, lack of interest or working
on a new program to replace a problem
that Mircorosofit is unable to resolve. Really bad situation for
Mircrosoft. Glad to read just how many others
are facing the same problem with Window Updates. I have Fehler Codes
80070490 and 80240016. Open
for workable solutions, as constant (!) crash dumps are totally
interrupting my work. Thanks, and not to
Microsoft.

0x80240016 WU_E_INSTALL_NOT_ALLOWED Operation tried to install while another
installation was in progress or the system was pending a mandatory restart.

What update are you trying to install and what update did you previously
install?

You receive a "0x80070490" error code when you use Windows Update or
Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when
posting to this newsgroup.

It's your problem, not Microsoft's. Tens of millions of users are not
encounter such problems.

There is a very good chance are that you are seeing the affects of a
hijackware infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

2. Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!) in Safe
Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
