everytime i log on to my computer i get a message saying that windows cannot
check for updates. when i click on "check for updates" after some time passes
it says "you must first install an update for windows update" so when i click
on "install now" some more time passes and it goes back to the first page i
see with the "check for updates" button. if i click that button again it
takes me to the other page again. they just keep taking me back and forth to
each other. its driving me insane, what should i do?

Chances are that you're seeing the affects of a hijackware infection (cf.
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=37919).

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum.

http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,

by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

- Try to follow the Steps below

Delete the Temp, %temp , Prefetch.
- Start >> Run >> Temp delete all the files from the temp. In the same
way open the %temp% & prefetch clear them out.

- Try to optimize the Internet Explorer by following

Start >> Control Panel >> Internet Options

Click Start, and then click Run.
Type Inetcpl.cpl, and then press ENTER. Internet Options opens
On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
In the Delete Files dialog box,
Click to select the Delete all offline content check box.
Click OK.
Wait for the temporary Internet files to be deleted. This might take only
several minutes in some cases.

Try to download the Dial A Fix

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...al-a-fix.shtml

run the dial a fix & then try to restart the computer

Restart the computer & then try installing updates
