Do to glitches there is no need to describe here, I have
been unable to install the .NET framework 1.1 service pack
1 on my computer. However, I feel confident I have
removed its traces from my computer. I am still unable to
install it from Windows Update, but the problem is that
Windows Update thinks the installation files for the .NET
framework are still on my computer, because it goes
straight to "Installing..." and does not go through
a "downloading..." phase. There has got to be a simple
way to fix this. I am using XP home SP 1. Anyone know
what to do?

Hi

Please try this:

Clean out the Download folder (WU5's temporary download folder)
located here:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

You can use the procedure described here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=11&ln=en

You might need to delete the DataStore folder mentioned in the link
above, as well as the EventCache folder.

Note that a side effect of deleting the DataStore folder is that you
lose your WU v5 History listing (not critical).

Clearing out the Download and EventCache folders made it
so Windows Update dowloaded the .NET framework again. But
it still didn't install. That means that my problem is
something much more serious. I didn't get any error
messages, I was just informed that it failed to install.

Hi

You may want to try the procedure that Eric outlines here:

The problem was simple, the .NET service pack won't install unless the .NET
framework is installed. As I said in my original post, I had totally
removed .NET from my computer.
