I have a weird problem since a week or so (at least that's when I noticed it).

When I go to Microsoft's Windows Update website, everything goes well, but
when I click search for new updates it gives me an error (without an error
code). I tried several things already ranging from reinstalling Internet
Explorer 7 to renaming the SoftwareDistribution directory, but all without
succes...

When I open the ReportingEvents log file, it shows the following:

following update: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for
Windows XP x64 Edition (KB947864)

The weird thing is here; the messages with a bunch of zeros in them, are
from the moment I go to the Windows Update website. The messages which look
normal are from the Windows Updates (security center). So it means that does
work.

But why can't I update (or at least search for) new patches / hotfixes on
the Windows Update website?!

Please advice. TY.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB947864).

!!! => If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE, call
the above number and ask to be transferred to the Consumer IE7 queue (which
is 47830). <= !!!

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.
