Problem with Windows Updates

I'm having a problem with Windows Updates. The download and instalation goes
just fine, then I reboot and things don't work. I have 81 updates that I
can't get to properly install. It messes up my computer everytime I try, but
it's only after I reboot. When I restarted I got a few error messages from
Avast!, COMODO, and it seemed like there was no internet connection (although
there was). The only thing I could do to get my computer working again was
system restore. Below are the error messages I recieved:

Avast! mail scanner warning Avast! will not be able to protect outgoing mail
(SMTP protocol) Error: 10050
Avast! mail scanner warning Avast! will not be able to protect incoming mail
(IMAP protocol) Error: 10050
Avast! mail scanner warning Avast! will not be able to protect news (NNTP
protocol) Error: 10050
Avast! mail scanner warning Avast! will not be able to protect incoming mail
(POP3 protocol) Error: 10050

Error 1068: The dependecy service or group failed to start

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs
to close

The COMODO application monitor is not active Reinstalling might help the
problem (it doesn't help though)

Windows version?

Did you just do a Repair Install of Windows? If so, why?

Search and Search before asking...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Can't figure that out?

Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:
- Windows Installer
- Windows Update
- All the Registration Center options.

Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot will be needed.

- Download/Install Windows Update v3.

http://download.windowsupdate.com/Wi...gent30-x86.exe
(You *may* need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce"
right after the reboot - immediately after logging in.)

- Download/Install the 927891 patch.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...9-404327772E5A

- Reboot.

- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates.

- Come back and let us know how things went!

Try the fix at the web page referenced in other responses to your posting
anyway (concerning the inability to install updates after a repair
installation.) It won't hurt and may fix your issue right off.

If not - try the Dial-a-Fix repair also suggested in your responses.

I completed Dial-a-Fix andt he 927891 patch, but when I tried Windows Update
v3 it said finished then it said didn't need to be installed because there
was already an installer. I noticed you said *may* need to install it using
the command line switch "/wuforce", but I don't know what that means or how
to do it.
