Ever since I installed windows vista and adobe reader 8.1 I have had problems
opening files. It never opens up the file. Instead it says that a problem
has caused the program to stop working correctly and that windows will close
the program and notify me of a solution. Then I press the close program tab
and get another message later that there is adobe reader isn't working. I
already uninstalled and installed adobe 6 times. Why is this happening?

Hi Sarah,

Go to Control Panel, System and Maintenance, Problem Reports and Solutions.

Click on the "Check for new solutions" link. If Microsoft has any verified
information about the problem, it will tell you what to do (eg to download
an update from Adobe, etc).

However I'm pretty sure there are no currently confirmed issues with Adobe
Reader 8.1 (that may change in future, as problems come to light).

So, click on "View Problem History" link to view the record of all the
crashes when using Adobe Reader. Make sure the right-hand column says
"Report Sent", so that the record of your problem has been sent to Microsoft
That is how Microsoft finds out about problems which needs to be fixed
(clicking on "Check for new solutions" should send the data, if it isn't
already).

Double click on one of the Adobe Reader records in Problem history. You wil
see the Problem Details: Problem Event Name, Application Name, Exception
Code, Bucket ID, etc. When you discuss the problem with Microsoft or Adobe,
it will be helpful if you include this information (just cut-n-paste it).
Any application can crash in a million different ways; but with the app
name, exception code and bucket ID, we can narrow the problem down to a
single specific issue.

If the crashing process is Acrord32.exe, you may need to report the problem
to Adobe. Even if it was caused by a bug in Vista, Adobe own the EXE source
code, they are the only ones who can fully debug the crash. Unfortunately
Adobe Support is even less responsive than Microsoft, in user forums; but
the Adobe Reader forum is at:
http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.ee6b2e6/

A simple solution would be to just use FoxIt2, a free, 3rd party replacement
for Adobe Reader:

Hope this helps,

I second that, much better than the now bloated Adobe Reader.

I tried the version 8 and didn't even get as far as you did. I opened a file
from the desktop and tried to search for a phrase. The search function had
to be invoked for each find and there did not seem a way to pin the search
in place. Since it is a function I often use, V8 got canned and went back to
V7 Acrobat reader.
