Hi!

Facing today problem with the WinXP Update for .NET Framework v1.1 SP1
(KB886903).

The update did begin and went on for some 30-45 seconds, but then stopped to
an error message, something like (sorry, do not have more accurate notings)

"SL5.tmp - CLR error correction service ...
... exception, not handled ...
... proc.=0xd78 ... thread=0xd84 ...
... cordbg.exe !a0xd78 ..."

So, what's this, never seen ...

Please, if anybody has some explanation or hint to handle this, tell me.
Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Pete V.

I have what sounds like the same problem ( XP pro SP2 ).

The error message I recieve is this:

***Common language runtime debugging services***
Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id=0xd2c (3372), Thread id=0xd30 (3376).
click OK to terminate the application.
click CANCEL to debug the application.

Any clues as to what might be causing this error ?

Hi!

Yes, I have read about a correction procedure for this, but not yet had time
to check how it works, but someone says it works ...

Please, check the other topic on this thread with the title "Problem with
install of KB886903".

Best regards,

Well guys after 4 hours of messing with this I can tell you what worked for
me. With any luck it can guide you too.

1. Download Windows Install Clean-Up program at
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;290301 and install.
(You can find it in the programs section of your start menu after install)

2. Download .net framework 1.1 (file name dotnetfx.exe) at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en (dont install yet)

3. Download .net service pack 1 (file name NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe) at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en (dont install yet)

4. Run Windows Clean-Up and remove the defective .net framework, Reboot.

5. Go to the start menu, then run. Type in "msconfig" and set it to
Diagnostic and then reboot to prevent other software from getting in the way
of the install.

6. Run dotnetfx.exe for a fresh new .net install

7. Run NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe, it will prompt that its already
installed, do it anyways.

8. Go back to msconfig and set it back to normal, reboot.

9. Run the regular windows update thru website or automatic service.

It should now do the update that previously resulted in errors. Good luck!

Hi!

Thanks Oscar for your advice.

I did apply them to my KB886903 update problem and got it solved.

But, sorry, for some reason I did get an install error in some 5 seconds
after the dotnetfx.exe install had begun, and after some more trials did
trace it due to the msconfig/diagnostic ... so, I did give up using that
choice and the install procedure did work fine ... maybe this had some
connection with the local language pack on my .NET ...

And, the NDP1 update seemed to be completely useless just repeating the SP1
update, maybe dotnetfx.exe do already include the SP1 ...

Thanks anyway, now I have also the .NET up-to-date and there is no more
pending updates for my WinXPPro SP2.

Best regards,

Pete V.

Hi!

OK, confirmed.

The .NET 1.1 SP1 update is really needed, before the KB886903 will be
properly updated, even during the SP1 update it is clearly declared not to be
needed!
I did try/test this on my other machine ...

So, my only deviation to your advice was the msconfig/diagnostic enabling
for the update process, which did cause me a problem.

Best regards,

Pete V.

Hi,
I just came to this link, thanks to a response to my question. Thank you.

Just questioning if many have done this and if have had any problems with
programs etc. after doing this. Really worried about computer problems since
had a crash some time back and changing the framework 1.1.
thanks,
Mysty

Thanks Oscar.
I tried this the second time and skipped the diagnostic load and it worked
fine.

I just want to say thank you for your post. After searching the internet for
hours on end, posting questions on numerous forums and newsgroups, including
this one, trying to find out how I could get the Critical Update installed on
my computer, I finally found your easy to understand step-by-step post. It
was just what I needed. For almost a year now this Update has shown up in my
list of Critical Updates & I have never been able to install it. I did skip
# 4, of your post since I saw other people had problems, otherwise,
everything went very smooth and I finally have this Update installed. Thank
you for speaking the English language and Not Microsoft language.
