I am having similar problems with getting updates to run with Win XP Pro. The
last successful update was SP2. In my case the update files are downloaded
and ready to install. When I attempt to install, the program is "initializing
installation" forever.
When I try to end the application in task manager, an error message
indicates that the program is "waiting for a response from you". There is no
dialog or indication that I have anything I am able to respond to.
The most informative error message I have been able to get from the WU
program is that the program believes that there is already an instance of the
installation program running and I should wait for that one to complete
before proceeding. Of course, there is no indication that the application is
running in task manager and I have been stumped so far in figuring out what
processes might be running that could be hung.
I did see one message about deleting the /windows/SoftwareDistribution
directory but that only allowed me to download the updates "successfully"
again and then have the same problem with getting past initialization.
Any suggestions? Please?
