Problems backing up

Backups are failing on our SBS2003. We use Backup Exec 11d backing up
to Backup to Disk folders on a Netgear ReadyNAS. All was fine for
about 18 months and they started failing about four weeks ago. First
we found corruption on the NAS drive, successfully backed up via
NTBackup to the local drive until we could fix it, created a new drive
and all was fine. For two days. Then it started failing again:
corruption found on c: drive, checkdisked, fixed and all OK again.
For a day.or so. Then it started failing again with "an unknown error
has occurred" and no further information in any of the logs. Tried
ntbackup again - this now fails with "Error: C: is not a valid drive,
or you do not have access" despite the fact that backup is some 4GB
complete. It never fails at the same file, sometimes backing up more
than others. Nothing logs in the eventlog. Error happens whether
backing up to NAS, USB or local drive and I'm now well and truly
stuck.

Any ideas or suggestions would be gratefully received.

If you look in the windows system event log does that record any disk
problems? If you are getting repeated disk problems it might be that your C:
is on the way out - and it just happens that at the moment the backup is the
only utility which is tripping up over it.
