I am using Windows 98SE and since installing the latest critical updates both
the defragmenter and scandisk (thorough setting) crash. Has anyone noticed
this with their systems?

Thanks. Worked for me too but it should be possible to use the utilities
without this workaround. Shouldn't Microsoft investigate this?

I too have lost patience with scandisc and defrag as it just will not run
unless "safe mode" is started. I have lost all functionality with the Disc
Maintenance programme as a result. Surely Microsoft can come up with a
solution??!
