Problems downloading and installing updates

Hi!

I recently recovered from a bad case of spyware, adware, etc, using spybot
SnD, adaware, spywareblaster, vundofix, spyprotect remover, hijacthis and a
couple of online scanners.

My computer seems to be clean now. I have one problem. Almost every time a
program starts (especially IE) the "windows installer"message appears,
"preparing to install" and then ie loads a while after I click cancel.. not
sure what this is.

My windows update doesn't work. It was on automatic, and previously just
downloads and installs updates for me.

Now, when I try to update, I get:

Error Code: 0x80246008
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following
resources.



Failed Updates
For help installing an update successfully, see the solution under each
problem description.


Problem: End User License Agreement (EULA) Not Accepted
Solution: Check for updates again and wait while you install updates. You
will be asked to accept the EULA before any updates with a EULA can be
installed.

Problem: Not Enough Disk Space
Solution: To make more space available, run the Disk Cleanup tool or
uninstall any programs that you don’t use. For directions, see Help and
Support on your computer.

Problem: Automatic Updates is currently installing updates
Solution: Please wait until Automatic Updates is complete and then check
your update history. At that time, if the update has failed to install, you
can try installing it from the website.
Note: To view Automatic Updates progress, click the updating icon in your
System Tray.

Problem: Please check your update history for a description.

Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB911280)

None of them download or install.

Appreciate some help with this!

I would begin by checking that the system files are okay -

With regard to your error 0x80246008
You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or the
"0x80246008" code when you try to download updates from the Microsoft Windows
Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site

the Background Intelligent Transfer Service

MS solution posted by another user:

This error 0x80246008 can be caused by multiple factors. When the issue occurs
again, I suggest we perform the following steps to troubleshoot this
issue:

Step 1:

Install MSI 3.1 via the following link:

Please install Windows Installer 3.1, restart and try the updates again. If
possible, please disable all firewall or anti-virus applications first.

Step 2:

Go to Start -< Run, type in Services.msc and press Enter. Please check the
following services:

"Remote Procedure Call" (RPCSS) should be enabled, Automatic
"COM+ Event System" (EventSystem) should be enabled, Manual
"System Event Notification Service" (SENS) should be enabled, Automatic
"Volume Shadow Copy" (VSS) should be enabled, Manual
"Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" (SWPRV) should be enabled, manual.

Step 3:

Go to Start -> Run, type in Reghedit and press Enter. Navigate to:

HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\SvcHost

In the right pane, double-click to open the netsvcs key. Under Value Data, add
BITS to the list of services. Click OK. Exit the registry. Restart the
system and check out Windows update again. If still fails, proceed to Step 4:


(Additional information added to original posting: Be careful with the above
Step 3 modification - make sure that the entries are not highlighted before
attempting to enter BITS or you'll lose the other entries.)

Step 4:

Click Start. Choose Run. In the Run box, type regsvr32 qmgr.dll. Click OK.
Click Start. Choose Run. In the Run box, type regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll. Click OK.

Step 5:

Go to command prompt (Start -> Run -> type in CMD and click OK), run the
following command

Reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\BITS\Parameters /v
ServiceDll /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d %windir%\System32\qmgr.dll

(All one line. Since this command is complex, please copy it and right click on
the Command Prompt window -> Paste, then Enter.)

(Additional information added to original posting: The above command may wrap to
more than one line therefore you may have to copy the same to notepad so that
it's one line - including any spaces in the line)

Then please restart the PC and retry Windows Update

If the above command does not work, please try the following again:

Reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestor e\FilesNotToBackup

Restart the PC and retry Windows Update. If still no success, go to Step 6:

Step 6:

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network

(Note: Application Data is a hidden folder, so ensure you go to My Computer ->
Tools -> Folder options -> View, check Show hidden files/folders)

Delete the Downloader folder.

Please take your time performing the above steps ............................

Just to add..

I enabled the BITS service after reading the microsoft troubleshooter, and
the updates were downloaded, all except the microsoft dot net framwork
servicepack 1.1, which is the one I need.

Not sure the others were installed yet, am going to check again.

Still need an expert to help out!!
