problems with downloading and unzipping files

Hi,

I am using Vista since about february and never had any problems, until
yesterday.
I got a new mainboard and cpu and made a completely new and clean
installation of Vista. First of the time everything went good, but suddenly I
was unable to
- download files via Internet Explorer
- extract files via Windows Zip/Unzip-Tool

Especially the download-problems are a little bit strange:
IE downloads the files. It also copies the files from the temporary memory
to the selected destination. Everything seems normal, but the file never
appears at the destination. Unzipping is the same. Everything looks normal,
but the file simply is not there...
The Problems are only with IE and the Win Zip-Tool, when I use Firefox,
downloads are no problem. Also WinRar works for unzipping.

I guess it could be an option of the Explorer or Internet Explorer, that is
wrong set. Could somebody give me a hint?

Thanks
Sebastian

You might want to try repairing your .zip file association. Download and
Merge the .zip file extension fix for Windows Vista, found here:

thanks dean-dean but part of the problem is that it is not possible to
download any file using IE7, not even repair patches or new versions of
explorer.

Thanks for your answer, but it did not work.
The problem seems to be a little bit more difficult. I tried to fix the
associations, but it is always the same.

I had a closer look to the IE now and saw, that it dowloads the files
correctly to a temporary folder. It also tries to copy them from this folder
to the chosen destination. Then the downloaded files are deleted from the
temporary folder, but do not appear at the final destination. I guess, that
it could be a rights-problem. It looks like the IE does not have
writing-rights at all. I do not know, if this is caused by the firewall
(Norton) or Vista. I will try my best to find out.

Sebastian

Just to be clear, murrayfield is having a problem with .zip files in
particular. You seem to be having problems with downloading all files. Can
you download files using, for example, Firefox? Are you saying that Vista's
Control Panel > Windows Update is not working either? If you are running
Vista, there aren't any downloads available for installing Internet
Explorer.

hi dean-dean

yes, i am having problems downloading all using IE7. I havent got Firefox
and cant download it either..because of this problem. I can access the
control panel and see the updates but believe that they are not installed..
same problem.

so it is seemingly a problem that cant be fixed as anything i need to
download i cant get with IE7. I have noticed though tha if i forward an
email to my other email address which uses Outlook then I can download any
attachment normally.

I feel like trying to submerge the laptop in teh bath.. it probably wont
work but it will provide closure.

regards
murrayfield

No... I have 2 problems:

First: IE7 does not download anything. He just pretends to do
Second: ZIP-Files cannot be unzipped with the Vista built-in ZIP-Tool.

For downloading Firefox works pretty well. There are not such problems.
For unzipping WinRar also works. The ZIP-Files are not the big problem
anymore, because I now use WinRar as standard-handler for compressed files.
So I do not have to use the Vista-Tool.
But it is a little bit weird, that I always have to switch from one browser
to another (IE to FF) when I want to download something.

So as I said before, I think, that there are problems with IE-writing-rights.
