Problems with IE6 after installing XP SP2

Prior to installing SP2, I scanned my computer for virus', ad-ware and
spyware using three different programs. I did a scan disk and then a defrag.
SP2 installed perfectly with no problems what-so-ever. However, when I went
to open IE 6 - it wouldn't open. I tried to open it by the internet button
on the keyboard and by the icon on the desktop as well as under programs.
The hourglass would come on for a split second and then go back to being an
arrow. After about a 5 minute wait, IE came up (several times actually, as
many times as I tried to open it). Once up, the address bar would only
search if you put the complete address in (http://)-never had to do that
before. The whole system was sluggish and kept freezing up, I would try to
get to some of the fixes suggested on this site, but would freeze up getting
to the websites. I have cable internet and prior to the SP2 install
everything worked fine and extremely fast. Rarely had a freeze up. I had to
un-install SP2 to get IE to work properly again.

Any ideas on what is causing this? Or should I forget SP2 altogether?

Thanks.

I have the same problem. When connected via dial up, every application I try
to load except windows explorer, freezes for 5 minutes. Even when I press
ctrl+alt+del the task manager is not responding. I did some tests and caused
the same problem on purpose having the task manager already open, where I
noticed that the CPU usage was 2% and mem usage was 200MB which is quite
normal, I believe. I uninstalled SP2 and everything was ok. I reinstalled SP2
and problem existed.
Any suggestions ?
Thanks!
