Windows Update tells me I am not the system administrator on my single
computer home system. As instructed, I go to Control Panel to check and of
course, I am the administrator.
When I download the security updates from Microsoft Update, it will
install everything but the Malicious software tools and has done that twice
in a row now.
Any advice out there?

It downloads the MRT.EXE to the Windows\System32 Folder and runs the file. It doesn't actually
install itself. You can download it manually and run it.

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool helps remove specific, prevalent malicious
software from computers that are running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000

thanks for your reply. I have downloaded the malicious software tool several
times, both letting it run by itself and also running it from a place on my
hard drive, but the system never seems to acknowledge it. Also, any ideas on
my "system administrator" problem? I appreciate any help on this.

Your system won't acknowledge that the Malicious Software Tool has been download and run. You can
locate the file named MRT.LOG in the ..\Windows\Debug folder.
Start/Run and type: notepad %windir%\Debug\Mrt.log
This file has the report of the scan - here you can check to see if it did indeed run.

As regards the Administrator only -
This error may occur if the Internet Explorer settings are preventing ActiveX controls from running.

Enable ActiveX controls in Internet Explorer
Start Internet Explorer.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Select the Security tab.
Select the Internet Web zone icon.
To adjust the security level, click Default Level.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Try Windows Update again.

Another cause for Administrator only message can occur if a program on your computer is intercepting

I will try the remedies you have suggested. I should have mentioned that
since I have not had "administrator" status, I downloaded the Microsoft
Baseline Security Analyzer and that's what continues to tell me I haven't
downloaded the Malicious Software Tool. If that tells you anything new,
please update me. As you have suggested, I will check to see if the system
sayd it has run. I'm skeptical about changing the Internet Options, only
because I've been in there several times over this, mostly to manipulate
cookies, but I certainly will try it.
