I have problems installing SP 1 on a Windows Server 2003. The
installation program archives old files and registry settings but then
the installation stops with a message: "Service Pack 1 Setup cancelled".

The last lines in svcpack.log file looks like this:
393.025: Registering Uninstall Program for -> Windows Server 2003
Service Pack, Service Pack 1 , 0x0
393.045: Failed To Move File D:\WINNT\system32\spupdsvc.exe error = 0x11
393.045: Failed to copy spupdsvc.exe to system32
395.709: UnRegisterSpuninstForRecovery, failed to delete
SpRecoverCmdLine value, error 0x2
395.709: DoInstallation: Failed to unregistering spuninst.exe for recovery.
402.399: DeRegistering the Uninstall Program -> Windows Server 2003
Service Pack, 0
402.399: Service Pack 1 Setup canceled.
27663.288: Message displayed to the user: Service Pack 1 Setup canceled.
27663.288: User Input: OK
27663.288: Update.exe extended error code = 0xf00d
27663.288: Update.exe return code was masked to 0x643 for MSI custom
action compliance.

AFAIK error 0x11 means "The system cannot move the file to a different
disk drive", so what is the installation program really trying to do here?

I've had the same problem, looking at both my own log and yours it appears
that both of our updates are on drive D (Second hard drive).

Could it be that it needs to be running on drive C to install correctly ?

Yes, that is the case here too.

I dont know, I just tested to change the TEMP environment variable to a
directory on the same drive as the Windows installation is located on
and I even tested to copy all the service pack files to a directory on
that drive, but nothing helped.

I've tried the same by extracting all the files onto a directory on C drive,
no joy gets to the end says it has an error and resets. can't find any
guidance anywhere else.

Think i've found the problem,

The service pack was listed on windows update hence why i downloaded it,
however it turns out the the service pack is for windows server, i'm running
windows server small business edition which will not install the service pack.

The small business server edition will be out in 60 days.

From a post on another forum the windows update list is being updated to
exclude the update from small business edition machines.

Hmm, I have Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition which should be supported.
