Problems with Intellipoint mouse

While playing the game "Sid Meiers Railroads" my mouse suddenly lost function
of its horizontal control, would not move side to side at all. Upon
restarting it would operate normally for a limited and variable time, then
lose it's horizontal movement again. After a few weeks the problem cleared
up, but reoccured while playing the same game again. Aside from stopping
playing this game, my favorite, can anyone give me any hints on how to
restore normal mouse function short of reinstalling my O.S.? I'm running
Windows XP upgrade over a copy of Windows 98 second edition.

in those archaic web groups?
