I had the same problem I see others have had: When trying to use Windows
Update to download security updates, it said I would have to validate my
'Genuine' Windows. OK. So it downloads whatever and says it will now install.
After a few minutes it reports that the install failed! So it looks like the
update IS downloaded but just won't install. I go to the validation site and
all goes well. Still can't install. So I dig through component services,
looking for clues: logs say install failed! Thanks!
Anyway, to make this long story short, this solution worked for me:
Download this file and run it after shutting the browser down. Then restart
the browser (Internet Explorer).

Thanks, that did the trick.I know my version is valid and it had no problem
in the past, just all of a sudden. Passed the test when I clicked on the
button to validate but could not get windows updater to update.

This worked and now I am up to date.
