Whenever I open Microsoft update . It get's to the second screen. "Checking
for the latest version of Windows updating software" and I get an Internet
Explorer error "Internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to
close". I have uninstalled and reinstalled both IE 7 and Windows Updater 3.1.
No change.

Have you tried starting without add-ons? Right click on the IE desktop icon
and select start without add-ons. Does the behavior still occur?

Does it list a specific such as pdm.dll or mshtml.dll? Have you scanned for
malware/virus?

And, you may receive a quicker response if you post to the IE forum:

The week I decided to reload my system with the virgin disks I go to download
my updates and the update site is non functional. Still have not had a
response from Microsoft. A real mess I tell you.

I have even gone to the microsoft site to check my user liscence to validate
my system. My system checked out ok.
