Problems with NET Framework 1.1 security update

Help!

My Windows XP Pro system keeps installing the same version of Security
Update for .NET Framework 1.1 SP 1 (KB928366) over, and over, and over,
and over, and over again. This all started rather suddenly, with this
update, over a month ago. I read some of the documentation that
suggests un-installing older versions of the .NET Framework so I tried
that, but the folder where the older version's files are supposed to be
stored no longer exists on my system. Hence, I can't uninstall the
older versions, and Update insists on installing the new security update
every time I shut my computer down. If I choose not to install it when
I shut down it waits until I boot back up, and installs the update
itself and then restarts. Since this nonsense started Update doesn't
seem to have installed any new critical updates, and it has been going
on for well over a month.

Is there, like, anything I can do manually to fix this? Why does the
update not "take"?

Download the Automated Removal Tool from:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archi...30/611355.aspx

Extract it to the Desktop and open the dotnetfx_cleanup_tool folder
Run cleanup_tool.exe, click Yes, agree to the EULA, and set the drop
down window to
..NET Framework 1.1
Click the Cleanup Now button
[ 3 log files will be created in Documents and
Settings\<YourUserAccount>\Local Settings\Temp
cleanup_actions.log
cleanup_errors.log
cleanup_main.log
You can view them by going to Start > Run > type in [or copy%paste]

%userprofile%\local settings\temp
Click OK]

Download and SAVE :
..Net Framework 1.1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
dotnetfx.exe

..Net Framework 1.1 SP1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe

KB928366:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
NDP1.1sp1-KB928366-X86.exe

**Totally** disable the installed antivirus software prior to installing
the above. Pleaes consult the Help file or the manufacturer's web site
to learn how. You may want to disconnect the system from the network or
the internet if on broadband.

Close all open programs and IE.
Install dotnetfx.exe, restart if requested to
Then install NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe and NDP1.1sp1-KB928366-X86.exe,
restarting ANY time if prompted to.

*REENABLE* the installed AV afterwards prior to reconnecting the system
to the network or internet.

Pretty involved process, but it seems to have worked. Thanks!

Is it necessary to disable the AV program every time there's a security
update for NET Framework?

That depends on *which* AV is installed. NOD 32 here and there have been
NO issues updating. Prior to that, CA EZ-AV was installed and while it's
fairly useless for most Users, I've never had to disable an AV for
anything except for defragging.
If any version of .NET Framework installed 'properly' and there weren't
any issues with subsequent Security updates, then no action is required.
Just leave 'er be.
