have 2 machines:
work machine is dell 4700 xp pro sp2 with office xp using word 2002. after
installing recent microsoft updates, i was unable to save documents in word.
didn't try to save web page. used system restore to go back prior to
updates. now i'm able to save documents in word. this machine has hp share
to web.

after reading thru some of these posts, i tried my home machine, also
recently updated. dell 4600, xp home sp2. works suite 2004, which uses word
2002. no problem saving document in word. would not save web page. has hp
printer software, but no hp share to web. restored to a prior date. can now
save web page.

i see in other posts success after uninstalling the hp share to web solving
some problems.

has anyone narrowed down the problem update(s) regarding saving documents in
word & save web page on machines without hp share to web?

any input greatly appreciated. i always try to keep updated.

thank you, len kiesling

I have the same problem
Is linked to software HP Photo and Imaging <version> XXX Serie

Now I can confirm failed version

HP Photo and Imaging 2.2.1 ScanJet 8200 serie
HP Photo and Imaging 1.2.1 ScanJet 4500
HP Photo and Imaging 2.5 ScanJet 5590 serie

2.0 scanjet 5550c Work fine.

I have No sollutions for now except remove HP Photo and Imaging or Patchs

Lenmeister! See below.

From a post in IE6 Browser newsgroup by Stephen Hui (13 Apr-06):

<QP>
We've determined that the majority of the issues people are having with
MS06-015 / KB908531 are due to a bad interaction between the security update
and a software component included with various HP hardware devices,
including but not limited to **=> printers <=**, scanners, and cameras.

Here are two fixes which should fix problems caused by the interaction with
the HP software:

Option 1 - Modify the registry
------------------------------

- (If you have multiple user accounts set up) Log onto the computer using an
account with Administrator privileges

- Click the Start button, then click Run and type "regedit" at the prompt,
without the quotes; this will start Registry Editor

- Locate the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Shell
Extensions\Cached key in Registry Editor

- Right click on the key and select New / DWORD Value

- Rename the resulting value "{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9}
{000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401", without the quotes

- Right click the value, select Modify, and type "1" into the Value Data
field

- Close Registry Editor

Option 2 - Kill the HP process
------------------------------

- Wait until Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, or whichever component is
encountering problems is in an unresponsive state

- Click the Start button, then select Run and type "taskmgr" at the prompt,
without the quotes; this will start Task Manager

- Locate any instances of hpgs2wnd.exe or hpgs2wnf.exe in Task Manager, then
right click on them and select End Process

Notes:

- Option 2 this may disable some HP device-specific functionality until you
restart your computer.

- Option 2 will correct the problem for the logged-in user, but not for all
users on a computer with multiple user accounts. For that reason, Option 1
is the preferred option.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If your computer is not currently unresponsive, you should only have to do
Option 1 or Option 2, not both. If your computer is currently unresponsive,
you should be fixed by doing Option 2.
I'm very sorry about the inconvenience this has caused you all; hopefully
this will get things back on track. Please note that MS06-015 fixes a
critical security vulnerability, so it's very important that you reinstall
it as soon as possible if you've uninstalled it. Please also keep in mind
that disabling Auto Update will leave your computer unprotected even after
we release security updates. I understand that this experience has been
very frustrating for many of you, but I really must still strongly recommend
that you leave [Automatic Updates] enabled for your own safety.
i'm a little confused about option 1:
the registry key is not "cached", it says "approved".
i found a value "{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9}" share to web upload
folder
if i:
"Right click on the key and select New / DWORD Value
>
> - Rename the resulting value "{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9}
> {000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401", without the quotes
should the existing "{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9}" item be
deleted?
and:
"Right click the value, select Modify, and type "1" into the Value Data
> field"
leave quotes off 1?
thank you,
There should be a key with the name "Cached" in parallell with the key
"Approved". Creating the registry value in the "Approved" key will not do
any good.
No, do not delete any existing values.
thank you for replies!
there are 2 "shell extensions" under the "current version" folder. under the
"shell extensions" there is a sub folder (key?) named "approved" i do not
see any "cached" keys under "shell extensions" or "approved"
i'm away from work machine. i'll return back monday 4-17-06 & check again.
thank you,
i checked work machine again. does not have a "cached" key. just "approved"
rather than complete manual registry change, i prefer to use freudi's fix or
kelly's corner
i didn't uninstall the updates. i used system restore. today i used a
program, work related, & it's showing problems. not sure if installing &
then sys restore caused it. i think it uses microsoft access and/or excell.
not sure. i have to contact the program's support.
thanks again! len kiesling
Jean, thank you sooooooo much. I had "save" and "save as" and "save in"
problems for the past few days in Word & Excel here at work. I literally
spent over 5 hours trying this & that, then on a fluke came across this
communities group & registered. Found your answer. I removed our old, unused
HP scanner 5590C programs and all is good. Thank you.
