I don't see anything occuring when I try to remove WLMessenger 2009 -
no screen changes. What is the registry key that I need to check for
paths and such?

I looked at the uninstall key and it's set to:

C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Installer\wlarp.exe

which DOES exist. Not sure what it wrong...

What version of Windows ?
XP or Vista/Win7

To uninstall Messenger go to:
XP (Control Panel > Add Remove Programs > Windows Live Essentials >
Uninstall > Deselect Messenger)
Vista (Control Panel > Programs and Features > [same as above] )

1) XP

I did those steps and nothing happened - even tried in Safe mode with
network ability...

I ended up finding and using ZapMessenger 1.0.0.0 by Jonathan Kay -
which did the trick. Also removed Messenger Live Plus which might
have also hel;ped....

On XP, the uninstall/repair window (the wlarp interface) has a habit of opening behind the Add or remove programs window. You have
to Alt-Tab to see it. I wonder if this was the cause of your 'nothing happened'.

You can Start > Run wlarp.exe to bypass the OS add/remove programs applet, but that's a bit academic at this stage.

On this Win7 pc which has only had WLM 2011, most of those files folders
appear to be WLM2009 (or earlier).
If nothing Live is installed, then those folders are no longer being used.
Fyi..if you later decide to install WL2011 or later, the contacts folder
might be in use to import from the prior to databased to the new database
(and stored in a different location).

Is there some way to force the removal program to always be in the
front?

I don't think so, and IIRC, it doesn't always happen. But if nothing happens when you click Uninstall/change (or whatever the
command is), Alt-Tab will bring the window to the front if it did indeed open.
