Problems with "safely remove hardware" icon after installing Updat

My computer updated with KB941229 along with some NVIDIA updates.

I use the "safely remove hardware" icon to disconnect some of my usb
devices. My children also use it for their Ipods. Before the update, it
would be just Drive F that was in the icon. Now it has my hard drive and
cd-rom drive listed in it. I'm afraid my children are going to accidently
remove the hard drive instead of their ipods. And in that case, I'm going to
have to "safely remove them!!"

How do I remove the hard drive and cdrom from the list? I'm running windows
Vista on a AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core Processor 3600. I am familiar with basic
repairs, but I'm still a novice.
