problems when trying to use microsoft update

Update icon appears in tray, but when I try to click on it, the icon
disappears.

Sometimes, I can click on the icon and the update window appears, then
immediately disappears.

Sometimes update appears to start, but then gives "Failed To Install" error
message.

When I search for updates on the update site, the site continuosly searches
but does not return any updates.

Using WinXP Media Center v2002 SP2, set for automatic updates. Last update
installed Nov 29, 2006.

Any suggestions what may be causing this?

the issues are:
You are offered an update for a product, but the update is not installed on
your computer.
You are repeatedly offered an update even if you have installed it multiple
times.
Installation fails for a particular update.
