May 10 after I received by auto updates it seemed like my settings had been
trashed. My desktop background had been reset, shortcuts were missing, the
task bar was gone, both browsers IE and Firefox were at installation
settings. No favorites or bookmarks, no add-ins.

I have turned off auto install on my update.

This is a serious hassle to have to rebuild your system because MS doesn't
get an update right.

I have done this twice now. First I did a system restore, but I didn't
remove the updates. Sat. 5-12, I open my computer to the same mess I had
Thursday.

MS, fix your updates. I have turned auto install off on my updates to try
to avoid repeating this every other day.

Any additional insight in what to do this is appreciated.

Sparx has been replaced with Sparx.SparxDell, on another machine it causes
explorer to close and upon trying to restart explorer it repeatedly opens and
closes it but no luck

This is something that Windows does when there is something horribly wrong
with your old profile, when you attempt to log in. I have no idea whether
it was provoked by a Windows Update, or whether it was going to happen
anyway.

You can recover access to your former documents by carefully dragging the
*contents* of the sub-folders:
"Desktop"
"My Documents"
from your old profile to the corresponding place in your new profile. Do
not drag those named folders themselves. It is more difficult to recover
settings and preferences - it might be easier just to re-configure
everything.
