I face the same problem here. I have a first generation AMD 939 board. CPU's
for this type have pretty well disappeared now, so the only way to upgrade
is to go all new which means DDR2 memory has to be bought, and a PATA
controller card because I have 4 IDE devices, most new m/b's having only one
IDE port.

It can become quite 'messy'.. :-)

Download a small system information app called SIW
http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html

You don't even have to install it, just download the standalone version.

Run it, then select Motherboard(under Hardware) from the side menu.

It should tell you:
What Motherboard you have.
What CPU and which CPU socket you have.
And most importantly the max CPU speed(not rating) your Motherboard
supports.

Ah, you must need a new PCIe graphics card to replace the AGP one too
then...

I just tend to build a completely new machine every three or four years,
with high-end components. I feel that building a cheaper computer with the
aim of upgrading later is a false economy.

I have a PCIe graphics card, but it only gets 3.8 on the Vista Richter
scale.

To be honest, upgrading has always been a lost cause for me as new
technology is always released the day after I buy anything.. :-)

THANKS, for the link. It is a great program that give me a lot of
information that I wouldn't otherwise have had. BUT, on my computer it
didn't say what the max speed CPU my MB would support. Only says "ZIF
socket" after Processor Upgrade.

For those who have lost their Vista Product Key, this program will show it.
