I am presently running an Intel Duo core processor with an ASUS P-5b motherboard. I would
like to upgrade to an Intel Quad or Extreme processor. Can I just replace the processor
or do I need to make other changes as well?

This might be answered better in the vista hardware_devices group. ASUS's
web site probably has info too.

This newsgroup probably gets more traffic than the hardware group, so you
might get your answer here. In the future, learn to cross post. That way
you have your message posted in multiple newsgroups all at once, and all the
responses show up in all the newsgroups. And, those who access the
newsgroups with news readers, even cheap ones like outlook express or Vista
Mail, will only see the responses as unread once. If you read it in one
group, it is marked as 'aready read' in all groups.

Yes, all the Asus P5 series boards can take Quad processors. You just need
to make sure you have the latest BIOS update. Sometimes you will find later
revisions on the Asus FTP site, to the ones that Asus Update itself finds.

If you want the very latest, go to the Asus forums, and ask where it is on
the confusing Asus FTP site. If you just want the latest stable release,
just use this page:

http://support.asus.com/download/dow...n-us&model=P5B

This is for the P5B. You might need another page for the Deluxe version.

Another point is, are you sure upgrading your Core 2 Duo is worth it this
stage? I got my E6600 last August, and this chart shows me that it is not
really worthwhile for me to upgrade it to anything else yet. I will wait
for true quad core processors before moving onto them (instead of the
current Kentsfield kludge), for multitasking, not speed.

You'd better check the specs of the motherboard. The manufacturer will
usually list compatible processors on the website and in the manual that
came with the board. Also visit Tom's hardware for his review [as suggested
by Synapse Syndrome in his/her reply].

HIS FYI

The BIOS version page is linked from the Asus page I gave:
