Product compatibility problems updating Office 2000 to SP2

My new computer has Winows Vista. I installed my Office 2000 Professional on
it. As no updates were being downloaded automatically I went and downloaded
SP1a, which seemed to download OK, even though I got a message saying it
might not have installed correctly. I clicked the message that said 'try
again with correct settings'. I'm not sure that anything changed.

I then tried to install SP2. This time I got a message saying that it would
not install. I got a message saying that the 'product compatibility
assistant' had done something (put some markers on?) and I should try again.
I did and got the same response.

Can anybody tell me what to do now?

Uninstall Office 2000, then install it again using Vista's
Program Compatibility Wizard:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...f5f101033.mspx

Afterward, download and install Office 2000 Service Release 1a:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=EN

Then download and install Office 2000 Service Pack 3:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=EN

How to find additional Office 2000 updates:

Thanks. I'd try this if I knew what 'clean boot mode' was. I may come back
to this if the suggestion from Carey Frisch doesn't work.

Thanks. This response has that aura of being from somebody who knows what
they're talking about. I'll let you know if it works.
