When I go to the Uninstall a Program screen, a program named "Microsoft
Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable" is listed with a file size of 5.2 mb. Yet,
I can't find such a program anywhere except on that screen. Any Ideas?

try freeware Revo Uninstaller. It gives more info about installed
programs and where they are. (right-click on installed program, select
"install location", or "Registry" may show some info about location.)

Programs in Visual C can be created 2 ways...with imbedded library or external
library...you have at some time installed a Visual C Program with the external
library hence the Restributable library is there. If you still have and use that
program it will not run without the library...suggest you leave it alone, you may
have more than one program that needs it since they are common libraries.

Correct: NEVER uninstall such common libraries, unless Windows tells
you to.

This is with the understanding that it has a valid certificate from
Microsoft, Inc, of course.

If it does not have such a valid signature, it is usually safe to
uninstall it. Keep in mind, however, that if the program which
installed the common library is reinstalled, it will reinstall the
common library once again.

Just a word about file sizes:

IF you are worried that such a small file will keep other programs,
etc. from running, or will max out your HD, you definitely have a HD
which is MUCH too small for Vista.

NEVER install Vista on a System partition smaller than 80GB, no matter
WHAT anyone else (including Microsoft employees or MVPs) says.

Especially if you have a great many programs, data, or media files on
the partition.

Try to always separate your data/media files from your program files
on separate partitions

Even better, purchase a newer SATA drive of a minimum of 500GB.

They aren't much more expensive than the drive you probably already
have installed Vista on. As an example, Tiger Direct has such drives
selling at around $79US currently.

JUst remember to NOT try to put Vista on the SMALLEST amount of free
space possible, as many are advising (and usually, all wind up having
to resize the partition afterward anyway.)

I get so tired of telling people this, and then seeing them later in a
different post asking HOW to resize their Vista partitions.

With OSes like Vista, being "conservative" with HD space is a BAD, BAD
idea, since they NEED all the space you can give them.
