Programs files dissapeared

For some reason my programs files ended up in a file folder on the desktop
and disappeared from Start\Programs. In other words the programs file went
from its proper position to a file folder on the desktop. I done a restore
and the file folder disappeared from the desktop but did not restore at
Start\Programs and I got a message

"system restore did not complete successfully. Your computer system files
and settings were not changed.

Details:

An un specified error occurred during system Restore"

This error is not new as I get it every time I restore although at times it
seems to have restored even with the above message.

I done a restore in the safe mode and got the same message. I seem to be
having more than my share of problems with Vista and have been doing quite a
few formats to straighten things out (most of the time as advice from my
supplier as I guess they don't know what else to do). This is very time
consuming and is causing me to resurrect my old computer and use XP which is
the best operating system so far.

I would love to trade this Vista for XP as it is making me go grey.

Try System File Checker.
And if using Norton, disable it before using System restore.

I shut down Zone Alarm and done restore but I still don't have my START\
PROGRAMS. I also went to the support site and successfully launched the SFC
program. The result was "Windows protection did not find any integrity
violations.

Edit sfc resulted in a blank txt page.

I will point out that the hard drive was reformatted in the past week. One
of many.

Also can you advise me if it is advisable to use SP2 now or should I wait?
