Somehow I have managed to change a setting that makes all my programs open in
Adobe Reader with an error message saying "Adobe Reader could not open
'wmplayer.exe' because it is either not a supported file type or because the
file has been damaged". It does this everytime I try to open programs such
as Media Player, Welcome Centre, icons in the control panel etc. Does anyone
know what I have done?

Messed up pretty good, that's what you've done. Have you tried system
restore yet? That is what it's for.

First thing I would is to UnInstall Adobe Reader... that usually fix file
associations back to normal.
