Progressbar never stops

When I go to the update site, everything appears and works normally. After
clicking either the "Express" pr the "Custom" buttons, a progressbar comes up
with the text "Checking for the latest updates for your computer..." above it.

This screen never changes. I have let it sit there for DAYS on end without
it ever telling me one way or the other about needing updates or not.

I have emailed Microsoft on this issue 8 times without response and this has
been going on since August 8th.

The file "C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.l og" provides no
information of any help. The last entry in this file is dated 8/4/2005
despite having attempted to run the update site nearly daily.

The files "C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log" and "C:\Windows\Window Update.log"
have no entries dated past 8/4/2005 despite running the update site daily.

I have another system here at home with the very same issue and reformatting
it did not help either. The problem started right about the time I updated to
the NEW Window Update control that does Office and Windows and more.

Any ideas?
