the prompt cursor is several letters wide causing problems when trying to
correct a typing error.

You need to post this to a newsgroup appropriate for the operating
system. This one is for the Windows update feature. Here is a list of

Also please provide more information about the sytem and problems, did
you install new hardware/software? Is this a change - if so what
changes did you make that caused this to happen. See this link for

What "prompt cursor"?
Please be more descriptive.. How do you get to the "prompt cursor"?
What application is in use?
