Many thanks John. I have looked at the properties, but cannot find any
pattern there. Since posting my original message, Dell support phoned me
back and spent quite a time looking at what was happening on my machine.
After going away to think about it, their final conclusion was that this is a
glitch in Vista, which they will be raising with Microsoft. In the meantime,
I guess I'll have to work around it.
