Protecting backup data files

Hi,

I recently bought an external, portable hard-drive to use partly for backup,
partly for mobility. It connects to the usb and I can copy files & folders
back & forth, no problem.

Some of the files contain confidential data. If the drive was lost or stolen
it might be embarrasing.

What are the best ways of protecting the data on an external drive ??

Using encryption software, which you have to buy
Or depending on version of Visa you may have encryption software ie
bitlocker

I'll give you the obvious response - don't keep embarrassing data anywhere
especially not on a computer because it'll never go away.

Take a look at Remora USB Disk-Guard. It's free and provides at least a
medium level of security.

I use the 3-2-1 method of backup

3 copies of the file
2 copies locally, 1 live, 1 on a secondary drive such as a network or
External drive
1 copy off site.

I use TrueCrypt, which is free open source software, to create an
encrypted virtual drive on my external backup. I put my secrets on that
drive.

It exists as an encrypted file until you need it, then you use your
password to open it as an unencrypted virtual drive. When finished, you
close it and it is reencrypted.
