I use TrueCrypt, which is free open source software, to create an
encrypted virtual drive on my external backup. I put my secrets on that
drive.
It exists as an encrypted file until you need it, then you use your
password to open it as an unencrypted virtual drive. When finished, you
close it and it is reencrypted.
