Public folder access

We used to have one User set up on our machine, with admin rights. All
our photos were stored within the Pictures folder of that User. After a
while I set up my daughter with her own Standard user profile. So that
she could continue to see our photos I moved them all to the Pictures
folder under the Public user folder. Since then I have transferred new
photos directly from my camera to the Public Pictures folder. We find
that when using Explorer to look in the Public Pictures folder she is
only allowed to look at the photos that I moved there. The photos that
have been transferred their since the creation of her user profile are
not available to view by her. I was under the impression from the help
files that everything that is in the Public folder can be seen by every
user (she doesn't have a password but I can't see that being a problem).
If I look at the security tab of the Public folder it lists
Administrators plus a few other odd ones such as BATCH or INTERACTIVE
as user or groups, but not my user name or my daughters. The next
folder down is Public Pictures which has an identical security tab
list. Below that is Photos which is also identical except for the
mysterious appearance of a user by the name of
S-1-5-21-780662997-3536156337-2274522895-1000 which has a question mark
next to it and if I press Edit it says it is an unknown account. Below
that is a folder named 2008 which has an identical security tab to the
folder above it. With the 2008 folder are several folders and at last
my user name appears in the security tab list. If I select one folder
that she can view the photos in and one folder that she can't and
compare the security tabs, they are identical - they have my user name
in but not hers.

Additionally, although she can't look at the photos by double-clicking
them and using the standard Photo Gallery software, the Google Toolbar
photo gadget will happily show them to her!

Any one any ideas?

Thanks, Si.

It looks as if the permissions on these files has become a little
confused, From your post I will assume you have a reasonable knowledge.

Go to the top level folder that you are having problems with and with
your administrator account "take ownership of the folder and select to
apply to all "folders and files"once that is completed set the
permissions of the "everyone group to either full or read, or
combination of the available levels that suits your purpose, I would
also set your own admin account to have full rights

The S..... "unknown user" is often the result of files from another
machine or OS (XP) where the original user does not exist on this
machine. or from a user being deleted on the actual machine.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I don't quite have the right leve
of knowledge. Can you tell me how I 'take ownership' of the folder
Whose permissions am I editing, the Administrator or the CREATOR OWNE
or who? The only folder with the Everyone user/group is the Use
folder. The Public folder and all its sub-folders don't have th
Everyone user/group in the security tab list. Sorry but for things lik
this I will need walking through!

Thanks, Si.

Hello Si

As for the basic mechanics of taking ownership and setting permissions
have a look at this tutorial ...

'Change the permissions and take ownership of your files and folders |
Windows Vista for Beginners'

Once you have set the ownership to "administrators" or your own user
name ...

If you navigate to the c:users\public folder and give the "everyone"
group full rights to the folder and all the items below it that should
allow the access you require

[image:
http://www.vistax64.com/attachment.p...&d=1227813475]

The image shows my public pictures folder but the required rights are
the same for the Public folder.

The windows help on this is available at any time by clicking on the
"learn about access ..." link as shown in the image

Hope this helps

Hi again,

Thanks for your reply. I found it easy to understand and implement bu
unfortunately it hasn't made any difference. To give you a bit mor
detail: firstly, the Administrator was already the owner of the Publi
folder but I re-selected Administrator again so that I could als
select the checkbox to ensure that the ownership was populated to al
the sub-folders. This seemed to work fine. The Everyone group was no
shown in the Security tab of the Public folder so, braving it, I adde
Everyone as a group to the list and gave it Full Control. This als
seemed to work fine. I then switched to my daughters user profile an
tried to open the offending photos - same as before.

Here's where I think it gets a bit weird and illogical. Firstly, wh
should one folder/photo be different to another when the Security tab
for all the folders and photos are identical? Secondly, if Everyone ha
full control then why can't she see the photos? Is there a way o
checking who is a member of what Group? Could it be that she isn'
considered a member of Everyone (doesn't make sense I know)?

I thought that since I've now had experience of adding Users/Groups t
the Security list that I should just add her user name to the list an
give her full control and see what happens but I thought I would chec
with you first. What do you think?

Cheers, Si.
