About to pull ALL my hair out - windows update

I've spent about 18 hours so far trying to reconfigure my old old computer
for use by my kids. The primary drive in this thing failed a while back, and
I just installed XP (not even SP1 - an old version) on what was the secondary
drive.

XP installs no problem - until I try to get the updates. I've reinstalled
windows 4 times now, always the same result.

The only way I can get any updates is via the automatic windows updater. If
I manually try to connect & scan for updates, IE chugs for about 20 minutes,
then comes up with an error - the website encountered a problem and can't
display the page I'm trying to view.

Meanwhile, if I turn on the automatic updater, it works in the background
and downloads and successfully installs 3 updates:
- update for BITS 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773)
- MS Windows Installer 3.1
- XP Update (KB898461)

At this point, things seem okay. However, if I try to manually connect and
scan for updates, I get the same error time & time again (can't display the
page I want error above). All the while the automatic updater chugs in the
background, downloading the updates. It gets to about 70% downloaded, then
evaporates. No matter what I do, it won't pick up where it left off, and
obviously won't install what it did download.

What am I doing wrong? Help!

Install the latest scripting engine
To install the newest version of the Visual Basic Scripting Engine, click
the link for the operating system that you are using.

Windows 2000 Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

If that doesn't help - see
You receive a "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display
the requested page" error message when you try to install an update
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;883614

Go to support.microsoft.com and download and install SP2 for XP.
Then try again.
WU no longer supplies updates for XP for anything prior to SP1

I should start by saying that the error # when the download fails is the
often-mentioned 0x8DDD0009.

Peter or anyone else,

Stupid question: how do I find the SP1 -> SP2 upgrade download? I've
searched for "SP2 download" and "SP1 to SP2 upgrade" and a bunch of other
combinations, but I can't find it at support.microsoft.com.

Taurian,

I tried your suggestions but nothing helped. I also tried a bunch of other
suggestions in similar threads, but nothing works.

Update: I finally got it working.

I tried updating the registry as per the instructions in this post:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...9-9fca92834d58

That didn't work. Then I deleted all the downloaded files/whatever as
detailed here:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...xp=&sloc=en-us

Then it finally started to work.

Thanks to all for your suggestions, and I hope this helps anyone else who
finds themself in the same situation (i.e. stuck!).

Before I forget, sorry for misspelling your name earlier, TaurArian!

I had this problem on a Vaio.
I solved it when I installed IE7 alone (not by the Microsoft Update).
Hope this help anybody
