I have a brand new piece of sh*t computer - Hewlett Packard. First day, out
of the box, nothing worked correctly. After countless hours on the phone
with HP, I ended up having to do a system recovery. Since yesterday when I
got the computer back after doing a recovery, everything seemed to be working
great until I did a system restore and it didn't restore. Prior to that I
went into Windows Update and installed Microsoft Update and suspect this is
why my system restore is not working. I am looking to find out how to
uninstall/remove Microsoft Update installation from the computer. Can anyone
tell me how to do this? I checked the obvious through add/remove programs -
not there. I went into windows explorer....not anywhere obvious to me. HP
won't help me. They say this is an issue with Microsoft and they can't help
me. HP says without knowing for certain that this must be why I can't do a
system restore - because of this new software (ms updates) and that I should
find out "elsewhere" as to how to remove this installation. Anyone out
there/here that can help me???????

Hi;

Adding Microsoft Update most certainly is NOT why your system won't do a
System Restore.

If HP says that MU could be the cause for System Restore not working, then
you spoke with an idiot. Next time ask to speak to an HP idiot higher in
the HP pay scale (supervisor).

Since this is a brand new computer, send it back and ask for a replacement.
If it failed to work out-of-the-box then there is a hardware issue. The
longer you wait the more difficult it will be to get a replacement.

After I read your post I tried going to Windows Update, and found that I'd
been switched to Microsoft Update. What I did about this was to ask WU
support to email me how to switch back to Windows Update. I'm unhappy with
Microsoft, so while I'm waiting for their reply I'm running Fedora
instead of Windows. Susse is also an option - I just select which
operating system I want at boot up. I think Windows is nicer than the
Linux alternatives; but Novell and Red Hat may be nicer than Microsoft.

I suppose I could go Apple - get a Mac. Maybe I'll do that too.

If no one tells you how to switch back to WU, and you want Microsoft to
respond to what strikes me as your reasonable request for information,
click on Help in Internet Explorer, then click OnLine Support. There's a
bunch of question marks in the upper right hand corner of the web page -
click on that, then select Microsoft Update in the left hand pane of the
next page. The next page says Windows Update - request support. Just keep
going until they tell you that you will get a response, then wait for it.

You need a Mac, plain and simple.

She's asking for help - not an opinion.

You may have already done this but just an obvious question... In Add/Remove
programs did you check the box at the top which says "show updates?" If you
did not, you will not see the installed updates. Hope this might help you
and I agree with sky king that this is not an MS problem.

That is extremely unlikely.

Go to the Microsoft Update web site.
Click "Change settings"
Check "Disable Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update only"
Click "Apply changes"

Change settings is on the left. You need to scroll to find Disable.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=901037
is the KB - WU support answered promptly.

Since I find Linux to be somewhat more exasperating than Windows,
I'm relieved not to be stuck with using fedora or susse. My concern
was that Microsoft wouldn't enable switching back from MU to WU.
