I recently purchased the Vista ultimate upgrade online. Not knowing,
got the 32 bit when I need the 64 bit, is there any recourse?

Right now I just have a product Key and the ability to download fro
the internet as well as a backup disk on the way, I have not don
anything yet, I am hoping for advice.

During the install, doesit give you a choice?

Thanks for the help

Hi

If you have the retail version, then as Leapfrog says, the one produc
key is good for either 32 or 64 bit Ultimate. OEM versions require
separate product key i.e. license for each bit version

When you say they are sending a backup disc , what do you mean ? Retai
versions of Ultimate will come with both 32 and 64 bit discs, so you ca
choose which to install. Again if there is one disc, it is the OE
version. It shouldn't be a backup disc - it should be the ful
installation dvd

If you need to change the key, your best bet is to contact the vendo
and get them to change it - you have not used or activated your key , s
any reputable vendor should do this for you - if they have alread
despatched the disc, you may need to return it to them before they d
this

Quicker you do this, the better

Who did you get it from - if they are a reputable supplier , I do no
see why they wouldn't change it for you

Hope this help

Thanks for the tips guys.

It is not retail. I think I am just getting a OEM disc. What happen
was I made some purchases through a vendor and for about half the price
you could get the upgrade discs. Being a one time deal, what seems to
be a good price, but not being at home, I made an educated guess at
which version I needed, but when I got home, I checked and found out I
blew my 50/50 shot.

Anyways, it seems the transaction was directed through Windows'
marketplace. And clicking around the vendors site in regards to this
issue, leads me to windows marketplace. In you guys' experience does MS
handle issues like this. Do these discs typically have both versions,
so just need a new key?

Hi

Though I haven't bought an OEM upgrade myself, as you are only buyin
one bit version - seems likely they will only send you the one dvd, i.e
the 32 bit dvd that your product key is for. Even if you did get hold o
a 64 bit dvd - your OEM product key will only work for the bit versio
you paid for , i.e.32bi

You need to ask them to change the whole order - the key and the dvd
If it's through, or approved by Microsoft, it should be a reputabl
vendor

Hope this help

Wrong. A generic OEM (unbaranded) key will work with either 32-bit or
64-bit. I've used a 32-bit key with a 64-bit OEM disc and vise-versa. Both
are activated.

Hi Brian,

So it seems it's a marketing ploy to make you buy it twice.

Thanks for the interesting information. It would be useful to lots of
people. You are running an OEM 32bit o/s and the 64 bit version, both
activated with the same product key ?

Thanks

Easier said than done - microsoft used you let you get replacement dv
free ($10 shipping ) , but in a masterpiece of customer relations, the
now only do it if you bought the retail version

You need to borrow one from a friend

If you manage to do that , post me and I'll show you how to use th
borrowed one to make your own

Hi,

It's very easy, you just put the Vista dvd in the drive, right click
the dvd drive , select copy, then paste onto the desktop ( contents of
dvd will copy in about 5 mins).

You then use any program that can pick up those files and create a
bootable iso file. Use the same program to burn that iso image to a
recordable dvd.

There is a tutorial about slipstreaming SP1 using vLite, so use the
free Vlite program ( you don't need to do the slipstreaming, or the
rebuilding) .

So just follow steps 1 (skip2) 3,4,5,6,7,8 ( only tick the make
bootable iso box at step 8), click next and it will go directly to step
14, then continue to the end. Takes 15 mins max.

See this tutorial and do the steps outlined above.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/15...ation-dvd.html

Strongly recommend you go to the 'www.vLite.net'
(http://www.vLite.net) right now and download both1.1.6 and 1.2RC.exe,
save them to a cd so you have them forever.

Hope this helps
