I there a way to purge events in Event Viewer?

Yes Right click on the event
and select "Clear log..."

In Custom Views|Administrative Events I see no "Clear Log" in the context
menu.
It's available in the other logs.

That log is a summary log. You need to clear all the other detail
logs.
