What did Gateway support have to say when you contacted them for
warranty support on this new computer? Until they fix the defective
hardware, any OS is likely to freeze up.

You'd have to use a 3rd party partition and boot manager, unless you're
willing to void your (so far unused) warranty and service agreements by
removing Vista completely.
