I have heard that even though Vista & XP support Quad-core they can't
utilize all 4 cores but only 2 in the OS (I am not talking about apps
just the OS) is that true. Also i am not talking about slots i am
talking about 1 slot with 1 Quad-Core CPU, with Vista or XP Pro does it
use all 4 thread in its OS operations? thanks

No such limitation exists in the named Operating Systems.

I have a meter that tells me all four cores are being used. Whe
testing the cpu with benchmarking all four go up so they are all in use

XP Pro does not switch to other cores as well as Vista does. I run a
pair of quad core Xeons for 8 cores. I see activity across all 8 cores
in Vista x64 Ultimate. I am looking for a benchmarking tool that can
hit all 8 cores and test them.

Thanks i just wanted confirmation, what you guys said i thought was
right, and when i googled it i couldn't find anything supporting the 2
core only argument.

So you are saying there is also no performance limitation with vista,
correct? In-other-word Vista & XP utilize 100% of each core for a quad
core as they would a dual or single core?

An example of what i am talking about is hyper threading, how intel
introduced hyper threading because there was a limitation in the CPU
that they couldn't utilize the 100% of it so HT was used to take full
advantage of the CPU.

Neither Windows XP nor Vista have a "core" limitation, they have a "physical
processor" limitation. As long as one physical processor is installed,
Windows XP and Vista will happily use whatever number of cores it supports.

XP and Vista can handle 4 cores with no problem...

XP is always faster on any kind of hardware than vista(the worst
operation system ever made by microsoft)

the only limitation is for 2 PHYSICAL CPU CHIPS,
however each one of these 2 chips can have as many cores as possible

thus you can have a motherboard that has 2 cpu sockets maximum, but each
cpu can have 4+ cores

oh.. almost forgot to explain to you that frank is stupid...

if you bump into him please call him a moron!

thanks

Are you just now figuring all of this out?

I've known this forever. In fact we use to run a slew of dual processor
work stations back in the 90's.

if you bump into him please call him a moron!

Hey guess what capin' crunch...Vista has completely destroyed you...and
it was soooo easy!...LOL!

That's correct in Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate.

Home Basic and Home Premium are both limited to a single CPU.

> however each one of these 2 chips can have as many cores as possible

Correct, in all versions.
